Concert to Feature Montreal’s Christine Jensen Quartet

Quebec Jazz, a special series presented this month at Jazz at Lincoln Centre by Effendi Records, featured some of it’s acclaimed artists on Monday nights at the Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The final concert of the series takes place on Monday, May 28 with the Christine Jensen Quartet, formed by Montreal’s Christine Jensen (saxophones), Dave Restivo (piano), Fraser Hollins (double bass), and Greg Ritchie (drums), guest trumpeter Ingrid Jensen will join the group for the performance.

Christine Jensen is considered “one of the most important Canadian composers of her generation,” according to the Globe and Mail, and she has emerged as a creative alto and soprano saxophonist/composer on both the Canadian and international jazz scene. Her most recent album is the 2006 release, Look Left (Effendi Records).

Her sister, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, has been a mainstay of the New York jazz scene for over a decade. Her performances as a bandleader, guest artist, as well as a featured soloist with the Maria Schneider Orchestra have taken her around the world. She has been nominated for several Juno Awards, including a win for her 1995 album, Vernal Fields, and has been hailed as “one of the 25 most important musicians of the future” by Downbeat magazine. All About Jazz magazine says Ingrid Jensen’s most recent CD, At Sea, serves to “cement her reputation as one of the finest players on the trumpet and flugelhorn.”

Jazz at Lincoln Center recently established the UPSTARTS! series, presenting concerts Monday nights the month of May featuring up-and-coming artists or established artists from abroad.

A collaboration between Jazz at Lincoln Center and Effendi Records, this year several Quebec jazz artists were invited to take part in the series that pairs established Quebec-based musicians with internationally-acclaimed American jazz performers. The May 28 performance by the Christine Jensen Quartet with trumpeter Ingrid Jensen closes the series, which previously featured Yves Léveillé sextet with American oboist Paul McCandless, Jazzlab with American saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and François Bourassa with Michel Donato and American composer and multi-instrumentalist David Binney.
