Vancouver Jazzfest “Big & Bold”

The grand-daddy of western Canadian jazz festivals promises a ten-day musical smorgasbord of jazz, blues, world music and more. Running June 22 - July 1 at a variety of venues, there’s something for music lover’s of all stripes, and a selection of ticket purchasing options including 3 & 4 day packs at a reduced single ticket fee.

Highlights at the Orpheum Theatre include saxophone legend Sonny Rollins; trumpeter Chris Botti with guest pianist Laila Biali; and pop-jazz vocalist Norah Jones.

Over at the Centre for Performing arts concerts scheduled include Cape Verde singer Cesaria Evora; boogie pianist Michael Kaeshammer; Braziilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto; and double-bills featuring saxophonist Joshua Redman and pop/rock/jazz trio The Bad Plus; pianist/vocalist Freddy Cole and David ‘Fathead’ Newman with the Tilden Webb Trio; and sax giant Don Byron with Kurt Rosenwinkel and band.

Meanwhile, the Commodore Ballroom plays host to the Urban Groove Series, and features a mix of greats including; Ninja Tune artist DJ Amon Tobin, who shares the bill with Montreal’s Patrick Watson; Afrobeat juggernaut Antibalas; blues guitarist Derek Trucks opened by vocalist Kellylee Evans; UK blues guitarist James Hunter and singer/songwriter Jackie Greene; modern music phenoms Tortoise, opened by Fond of Tigers; Montreal-based DJ Champion in a double bill with San Francisco’s DJ MIKE Relm; sound designers Adham Shaikh & the Collective along with London-based Gaudi, and turntablists Eric San, and Kieren Hebden with drummer Stephen Reid.
