Blues in the Woods

Just 30 minutes from Winnipeg, Great Woods Park in Beausejour, Manitoba, plays host to four days of world-class blues at the the Great Woods Music Festival, slated this year for August 9 – 12.

With two stages running rain or shine, the 12th annual event will serve up some of the finest regional and international blues of the summer festival season at the 120-acre park and campground on the banks of the Brokenhead River.

There’s an impressive list of headline acts that have been announced to date, with other names to be added to the roster over the next weeks.

Scheduled for opening night on Thursday, August 9 is legendary Mississippi blues giant Lil’ Dave Thompson; while the Friday features Australian blues-rocker Rob Tognoni; UK’s art-rock pioneers Audience; and Chicago-based harmonica player Pierre Lacocque & Mississippi Heat.

Saturday’s lineup includes Victoria, B.C. firecracker Auntie Kate & her Uncles of Funk; Texas guitar wizard Ruben V; Spain’s answer to SRV, guitarist Javier Vargas and Vargas Blues Band; and the 7-piece horn band Mighty Lester from North Carolina. Headliners on Sunday include Winnipeg folk/roots duo Jacob and Lily; country/Piedmont/Delta guitarist Patrick Sweany from Kent, Ohio; Delta blues king Boo Boo Davis & band; and Nick Moss & the Flip Tops from Chicago.
