Cesaria Evora the Queen of Afro-Portugese Blues

There’s a special Vancouver International Jazz Festival preview tonight at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts, when Cape Verde’s Cesaria Evora takes the stage.

Considered one of the greatest singers of our time by fans and critics alike, Cesaria Evora is known as the ‘Queen of Morna’, a slow, mournful ballad style similar to Portugese Fado but with an African influence. The Grammy award-winning vocalist is known for her ability to evoke the emotion of the music, and is often compared to Billie Holiday for her delivering the melancholy of the blues in her performances.

The preview concert is presented by the Coastal Jazz & Blues Society as part of the Vancouver Jazzfest.
