Sonksen Takes a Day off From Banff Centre Jazz to Perform in Calgary

The Calgary Jazz Performance Series and the New Calgary Jazz Festival present bassist Mark Sonksen in Quartet with Keith Smith (guitar), Gerry Hebert (saxophone), Jon May (drums), on Wednesday, June 20 at the Hillhurst/Sunnyside Community Centre.

The concert will be the season closer for the Calgary Jazz Performance Series, a community-based presenter started by a group of Calgary jazz musicians that showcases local jazz artists and their original works.

A highly skilled bass player and a gifted composer, the Chicago-based Sonksen’s music is accessible straight ahead and Latin-tinged jazz. While strongly rooted harmonically in the modern jazz idiom, his works incorporate a wide variety of influences from Brazilian to Latin-tinged jazz and Argentine Tango music. Over the years Mark has been blessed with the opportunity to play music with great artists including Bobby Shew, Louie Bellson, Jodie Christian, Diane Shuur, Ira Sullivan, Ed Thigpen, and Hugh Fraser, among others. He has also been the recipient of various grants and awards recognizing his talents as a composer. Two CDs, Blue Visions: Compositions of 1995/1996 and the recently released Alba highlight his original compositions and arrangements.

Sonksen is currently back in Banff for both the composers workshop and the jazz orchestra workshop, where he will be performing with Maria Schneider on June 23.
