Saskatchewan Jazzfest Concerts Spread to Regina, North Battleford

Running June 22 – July 1, the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is based mainly in Saskatoon, but jazz lovers in Regina and North Battleford don’t have to wander far to be a part of the festival, as the organizers program concerts in their areas as part of the annual event.

Concerts in Regina began Saturday, June 23, with the sold-out Jon Ballantyne show, and will run through to the end of the festival, while on Thursday, June 28, North Battleford is included in festival activities.

Robin Nolan Trio

Robin Nolan (solo guitar), Kevin Nolan (rhythm guitar), Simon Planting (double bass) The Robin Nolan Trio (RNT), formed in London in 1992, tips the musical hat to Gypsy Jazz, Latin, and jazz standards from the Great American songbooks, all with a contemporary sound.

Uptown Jazz

This Regina-based quintet specializes in mainstream progressive jazz, Latin fusion, and selected elements of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and the Jazz Messengers.

Wednesday June 27
Bob Moyer Big Band Dance
Hotel Saskatchewan

Featuring music from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s performed by one of the premier big bands in Canada. The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is proud to honour Bob Moyer Big Band vocalist Pat Steel with the 2007 Special Recognition Award for Pat’s contribution to jazz in Saskatchewan.

Dionne Taylor Quartet

Regina born-Toronto based vocalist Dione Taylor cites Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan, Leontyne Price and Johnny Hartman as influences. Her 2004 debut, Open Your Eyes earned her Juno, Canadian Urban Music and National Jazz Award nominations, and was named one of the Top Recordings of 2004 by Canada’s premiere jazz radio station, Jazz.FM 91. Taylor’s latest, I Love Being Here With You, features a mix of jazz standards and performances by such greats as pianist Benny Green.

Matt Anderson
The Exchange

A blues, roots and rock hybrid, guitarist/singer Matt Anderson’s music is featured on his debut EP One Size Never Fits and two critically acclaimed Live CDs, Solo at Sessions which was multi-nominated for the East Coast Music Awards and most recently Live at Liberty House.
