Randy Bachman and New Guitar Summit Make Sweet Music

When New Guitar Summit toured western Canada in May of 2006, they stopped by Randy Bachman’s studio near Vancouver to lay down a few tracks. The result of that session is now available with the release of Jazzthing ll, a rare guitar quartet work that features the Canadian rock and roll legend alongside New Guitar Summit, a trio formed by American guitar giants Jay Geils, Gerry Beaudoin and Duke Robillard.

Jazzthing ll is Bachman’s latest in a series of releases where he steps out of his rock image to explore jazz, with the sequel to Jazzthing CD (2002) followed by Jazzthing DVD (2006), continuing along the musical journey. The live-off-the-floor recording crosses a wide musical terrain of styles and feels, and includes an update on the McHugh/Field classic Exactly Like You, a couple of Mose Allison gems such as Your MInd is on Vacation, a great arrangement of Del Shannon’s Runaway, and several familiar Bachman songs including his signature Takin’ Care of Business, as well as a new composition, Closing Time.

With a “rehearsal” the night before at the Yale hotel when the four guitarists got up to jam (what a night that must have been for Vancouver audiences!), the four musicians gathered at the studio the next day to lay down the tracks, sitting in a row and gliding through the tunes, the interplay between them synergistic as they melt into solos that showcase their distinct styles.
