C-Jazz Carnival Closes Out Summer Festival Season

Calgary’s C-Jazz Carnivale 2007 kicks off the end of this month with a weekend of jazz to close out the summer. Running August 28 to September 2, there will be a variety of jazz events to take in at various downtown clubs and venues.

Bill Frisell Trio
Thursday, August 30th
Quincy’s on Seventh - 8pm

Grammy award winning guitarist Bill Frisell with his trio, featuring Joey Baron and Tony Scherr. “It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he’s found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness.” - NY Times

Libertango!

Quincy’s on Seventh - 8 pm

Libertango is a genuine tango orchestra. They’ve been greatly influenced by Astor Piazzolla, who created the fusion of Tango and Jazz. Astor’s influence was so large that you have often heard of his music in the radio, coffee shops, and movies without even knowing it.

Saturday, September 1
Quincy’s on Seventh - 8 pm

Latin/World group ¡Bomba! is led by three artists of contrasting cultural and musical backgrounds- drummer Mario Allende originally from Chile, bassist Rubim de Toledo of Brazilian descent, and keyboardist Chris Andrew from Vancouver Island. Taking different routes to the same destination, they landed in Edmonton, Canada and banded together to share one vision.

Each day at noon and again at 4:00 pm, C-Jazz and the Calgary Downtown Association will present festival artists on the Stephen Avenue Mall at the california 103FM stage.
