Young Musicians Carry the Jazz Torch
Jazz Regina presents another concert presentation of its ongoing season Thursday, August 23, when the Derek Friesen Quintet with Carl Bray take the stage for Live at the Theatre Lobby at the Conexus Arts Centre. Forming the balance of the group are Jeff Richardi (tenor saxophone), Alain Bourgois (drums), and Teegan Jeffers (bass).
Regina trumpeter and arranger Friesen, who began his career with the Regina Lions Band, has traveled around the globe. He is familiar to Regina audiences for his work with the FDQ Jazz Quintet, who have performed sold-out ‘Homecoming’ concerts for the last two years. He met saxophonist Richardi and drummer Bourgois at McGill University, where the three are enrolled in the jazz program. Bassist Jeffers attends the University of Saskatchewan.
Pianist Bray, a member of the FDQ Jazz Quintet while still in high school, is now enrolled at Humber College’s music program. Bray was the recipient of the 2006 Oscar Peterson Grant for Jazz Performance.
The youthful group will bring their fresh take on contemporary jazz and standards for the upcoming performance.
