Delta bluesman brings the sounds of the deep south to Inglewood
Calgary’s Ironwood Stage is at the top of this city’s finest live music venues, and is known as home to some of the best in blues and roots music on the scene today. Located in the historic Inglewood community, the club runs music seven days a week and features regional artists in a variety of formats from singer-songwriters to blues, folk and country acts.
On Friday, August 24, the club will be presenting Delta blues guitarist Doc MacLean for an evening of original song and storytelling. The talented musician was first known for his work as an accompanist playing his harmonica and washboard, but soon struck out on his own as guitarist, singer and bandleader. He toured his group, the New Orleans-based Dr. Limbo and His Fabulous Off-Whites, who boast such alumni as Colin LInden, Gord Johnson, Chris Whitely, Kevin Breit and Gene Taylor.
Performing on bottleneck and standard guitar, Doc MacLean now appears solo or in a trio format with upright bass and percussion. HIs sound reflects the spirit of traditional string and jug bands as well as Delta players such as Son House and Charlie Patton.
Doc MacLean will appear for a second time this week, when he takes the mainstage at the Calgary International Blues Festival on Sunday, August 26, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings as part of the festival workshop series, hosted by Calgary blues great Tim Williams.
