McCaslin Releases New Quartet Album
One of New York’s busiest tenor saxophonists, Donny McCaslin travels to Ontario and Quebec this week in support of his new release In Pursuit, on Sunnyside Records. McCaslin will perform several dates in Canada before heading off to China, appearing with his quartet featuring Ben Monder (guitar), Scott Colley (bass), Antonio Sanchez (drums).
Since moving to New York in the early 1990s McCaslin has built a reputation for versatility, poise and a vigorous approach to improvisation. He holds a sideman post in two of the more prominent ensembles in jazz, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Dave Douglas Quintet, having previously spending time with bassist Eddie Gomez, and Steps Ahead while still in his early 20′s. McCaslin steps out regularly as a bandleader, having previously released Exile From Discovery, Seen From Above (2003>, The Way Through (2004), Soar (2006), and Give and Go (2006), all of which received fine reviews and gained him a reputation as one of the finest players on the contemporary jazz scene today.
