Tyler Hornby Quartet at Beat Niq on Saturday

Calgary drummer Tyler Hornby brings his quartet to the stage on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Beat Niq. Filling out the quartet are Jim Brenan (saxophone), Aaron Young (guitar), Richard Erickson (bass).

Coming off a successful east coast (Sillan & Young) and European tour (Maciek Grzywacz), Tyler Hornby returns to Beat Niq for one night only, leading his own quartet of leading Calgary musicians.

Tyler Hornby has emerged as one of Canada’s most versatile and contemporary drummers, known for his melodic sense and rhythmic finesse. He has toured North and South Americas and Europe with such greats as Frank Mantooth, Alain Caron, Randy Brecker, Hugh Fraser, Tommy Banks among them, as well as Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and electric jazz group Terrain, where he serves as drummer and co-leader.

Hornby’s debut acoustic jazz album entitled Shadows of a Brighter Day received rave reviews and was recently selected for a National Campus Compilation entitled Dig Your Roots. The album showcases Hornby’s post-bop and contemporary compositions, with their odd meter influences, and unique harmonic and melodic twists.
