CKUA Celebrates 80 Years of Programming With Penguins on Broadway

CKUA Radio, Alberta’s award-winning listener supported radio station, has been broadcasting it’s eclectic program for 80 years, with the octogenarian birthday being officially celebrated on November 21, 2007. Known for their cutting edge programming selected by their listening audience, the non-profit station has played an instrumental role in the discovery of new Canadian talent, as well as profiling artists from around the globe.

In celebration of the 80-year milestone, this fall the station is hosting a number of events throughout the province. On Saturday, October 13 at Quincy’s, Big Band fans will have the opportunity to join the celebration with host David Ward, of CKUA’s ‘Afternoon Edition’ program, with a dance party featuring the ever-popular Penguins on Broadway, a Calgary-based group.

Under the directorship of Brad MacIntosh, Penguins on Broadway boasts an impressive history of their own, having entertained audiences for over 20 years. The group has performed a long and at times unusual list of engagements, including the reopening of LIons Street Bridge and performing for hockey great Mike Vernon’s wedding, several annual Decidedly Jazz Dance Workshop’s Black & White Ball, and the Tamaram telethon in Grande Prairie. Penguins on Broadway recently released their album Bye, Bye Wally, featuring 12 original tracks written by band members Brad McIntosh, Mike Lauchlan, Jeff Burrows and Brad Steckel.
