Contemporary Duo Bethany and Rufus Perform Alberta Concerts

New York cello and voice duo Bethany and Rufus visit Alberta next week, performing two dates, Friday, Oct. 12 at Festival Place in Sherwood Park, and in Calgary at the Southwood United Church on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Meeting in 1999, the two have developed a sound that crosses seamlessly between groove, jazz, and traditional folk music, fully present in the contemporary scene while being immersed in the roots of American music.

Bethany Yarrow comes by her muse honestly as the daughter of folk legend Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. She has released one solo CD Rock Island in the electronic pop format, fusing roots and blues into the sound and earning her comparisons to Annie Lennox, Dido and Grace Slick. She is also highly regarded as a documentary filmmaker, having produced the award-winning Mama Awethu!, nationally aired and winning numerous prizes from such prestigious groups as Sundance, Berlin, Human Rights Watch, and Bombay film festivals.

Rufus Cappadocia is considered one of the leading voices of cello in the music industry today, playing a self-designed five-string instrument and collaborating with groups and artists around the world. He’s toured extensively and recorded with a host of legends including Aretha Franklin and Odetta, as well as a Canadian release with violinist Hugh Marsh and drummer Barry Romberg.
