Big Road Blues Tour
Canada’s Most Traveled Bluesmen Cross the Nation
Canadian blues greats Doc MacLean and Big Dave McLean may have put on more miles touring the nation than any self-respecting politician by the time they’ve finished their current tour. The pair will head west now that they’ve covered the eastern provinces, and will have performed over sixty shows from Halifax to Ucluelet by the time they’re done.
The two met in 1975 at the Winnipeg Folk Festival when they discovered their mutual admiration for blues legend Muddy Waters, with whom they both toured over the years. More than thirty years down the road, Doc and Dave have reunited this fall for a Canadian tour, wowing audiences across the nation with their wide landscape of traditional and original music.
Winnipeg’s Big Dave McLean is a masterful guitarist, having influenced an entire generation with his gritty, passionate style and his original songs that reflect the prairie around him. He has performed for over three decades, in recent years being recognized with honours such as Juno, West Coast Music and Prairie Music awards, as well as multiple Maple Blues nominations.
Big Dave’s soon to add to his discography with an upcoming release on Stony Plain Records.
First known for his work as an accompanist on harmonica and washboard, Delta bluesman Doc MacLean (Toronto) went on to make his own mark as a guitarist, singer, arranger and band leader. The vagabond musician is as likely to be seen playing on the streets of Memphis or Atlanta as opening a show for BB King or Duke Robillard. In 1972 he formed a duo with Colin Linden and became a popular opener for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Muddy Waters. Mentored by Son House, Doc went on to tour with Peg Leg Sam the Medicine Show Man, Blind John Davis, Sunnyland Slim, Rev. Pearly Brown, the Carter Family, and Sam Chatmon.
