Martin Voted One of Top Three Guitarists in the World

Voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by Guitar Player magazine, Flamenco master Juan Martin will appear in a trio format in Calgary at the University Theatre on Friday, October 19.

International Flamenco master Juan Cristobal Martin has graced stages around the globe, including such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre and London’s Royal Albert Hall, as well as major international festivals throughout Europe. Among his many achievements, Juan Martin is the first flamenco guitarist to record with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in Malaga, Spain in 1948, Martin first picked up the guitar at the tender age of six. In his early twenties he studied in Madrid under Nino Ricardo and Paco de Lucia, and performed in clubs in Malaga, Seville and Granada. Martin released his debut CD Picasso Portraits in 1981, featuring his original composition paying musical tribute to the painter’s work, and including leaders of the contemporary rock scene including studio sessionist Simon Phillips (Mike Oldfield Band) and members of Jeff Beck’s band. He’s gone on to record over a dozen more albums, and released his work in DVD format. He also makes a number of guest appearances on such recordings as Rory Gallagher’s 1984 release Wheels Within Wheels, and has shared the stage with such notables as Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis.

Martin’s method book El Arte Flamenco De La Guitarra is printed in various languages and is and international bestseller now in its seventh print and is widely recognized for its conventional notation and cifra plus information on the lore, language and history of Flamenco.
