Rosemary Gallery Quartet in Calgary

This Sunday, November 9th C-Jazz presents the second installment of the Best of Canadian Jazz Series, with a concert featuring The Rosemary Galloway Quartet.

Bassist and composer Rosemary Galloway leads an ensemble of fellow Toronto jazz greats with Pat LaBarbera (saxophone), Gary Williamson (piano) and Terry Clarke (drums), for a night of post-bop originals and a contemporary take on standards. The group is traveling in support of their release Live At Montreal Bistro, voted one of the top ten best CDs of 2006 by Toronto Star’s Geoff Chapman.

Galloway’s other work includes writing for and leading her own groups (Velvet Glove, Swing Sisters), as well as collaborative projects including Jim Galloway’s Wee Big Band and the Jane Fair/ Rosemary Galloway Quintet. Her long list of credits include performing with famed international musicians such as Clark Terry, Buddy Tate, Doc Cheatham and Jay Shannon, and Canadian jazz greats Lorrain Demarais, Norman Amadio and Jane Bunnett.

Pat LaBarbera is internationally known for his work with the Buddy Rich Big Band and Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine. He also performed with the big bands of Count Basie, Woody Herman, and Louie Bellson, as well as performed and recorded with Chet Baker, McCoy Tyner and Dizzy Gillespie, among the many.

Terry Clarke is one of Canada’s most in demand jazz musicians. He tours the globe regularly with guitarist Jim Hall, and most recently was invited to record with Nancy Wilson. Terry is a founding member of Canada’s Boss Brass. He spent many years in Oscar Peterson’s trio and has worked with a who’s who of Canadian and International jazz musicians.

Opening the evening is Vancouver ensemble the Gord Grdina Trio. Grdina (guitar, oud) leads the group through mainstream jazz, free-form improvisation and Arabic classical music.
