Jazz Trio Appears at the Bassment Tonight

Saskatoon jazz fans are in for a treat tonight when Calgary’s Manic Thematic, a top-drawer contemporary jazz trio, appears at the Bassment. The concert is presented by the Saskatoon Jazz Society.

Forming the trio are Ralf Bushmeyer (guitar), John Hyde (bass), Andy Ericson (drums), leading jazz musicians in Western Canada, each with successful independent music careers. The group has been together a handful of years and has produced two albums, the self-titled John Hyde/Ralf Buschmeyer Manic Thematic (2003), and Say Yes (2005).

Currently serving on the faculty of the Mount Royal College Jazz program, Ralf Buschmeyer is a graduate of Mohawk College, where he studied with Lorne Lofsky. He has toured across Canada as sideman and as co-leader of jazz fusion group Terrain. A Godin Guitars artist, Ralf has performed with PJ Perry, Guido Basso, Ingrid Jensen, and Jack Semple, to name a few.

John Hyde has numerous recording, arranging and producing credits including Amos Garrett, Sheri- D Wilson, The Tanya Kalmanovitch Trio, Senator Tommy Banks, Tim Tamashiro, Craig Korth, Anne Loree, and many more. His performance credits span multiple styles and include jazz, with Marion McPartland, Bill Watrous, Oliver Jones, and Mark Murphy, pop, with K.D. Lang and Jann Arden, classical, with Land’s End Chamber Ensemble, New Works Calgary and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, dance, with Decidedly Jazz Dance and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and theatre, with the recent production of The River (based on Joni Mitchell).

Andy Ericson has performed in Calgary for over 20 years, and is an in-demand sideman with credits including projects with Kristian Alexandrov, Rubin de Toledo, Gary Wolfe, Jeremy Coates, and more. Ericson also owns and operates a very busy recording studio.

Opening the evening is up-and-coming vocalist Elise Epp, who appears with her quartet.
