Kensington Suite 3rd CD for Alto Great

JUNO award-winning saxophonist Richard Underhill releases his third CD Kensington Suite on Thursday, November 15 at the Rex Hotel.

The Toronto based musician and composer will be joined for the concert by an all-star cast in celebration of the event, with Kelly Jefferson (tenor saxophone), Reg Schwager (guitar), Eric St-Laurent (guitar), Artie Roth (bass), and Ethan Ardelli (drums), along with special guests yet to be announced.

One of the nation’s foremost jazz musicians, Underhill is known for his warm alto sound, impressive writing and arranging skills, and his distinctive soloing voice. He’s the recipient of a JUNO for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year for his solo debut album Tales From the Blue Lounge, and was nominated for the Prix du Jazz at the 2003 Montreal Jazz Festival. A founding member of the Shuffle Demons, the acclaimed group toured Europe and Canada for over two decades. His second album, Moment in Time, released in 2005, is a fan favourite and has garnered significant critical acclaim.

Underhill’s impressive credits include a wide cross-section of artists and genres, with such names as The Neville Brothers/Meters, Han Bennink, Julius Hemphil, Dr. John, Kathleen Edwards, Taj Mahal, Maria Muldar, Rob McConnell, Molly Johnson, Blue Rodeo, Andy Stochansky, Hawksley Workman, The Sadies, Luke Doucet, Bobby Wiseman, Soul Rebels, the Mighty PoPo, Paul Cram, Kevin Breit, the Hemispheres Orchestra, NOMA and Toronto jazz stalwarts like Reg Schwager, Jake Langley, Steve Koven, Ron Davis, Wayne Cass, Tyler Yareema, Tory Cassis, and George Koller. In demand as a session player and sideman, he has written horn and string arrangements for Kathleen Edwards, Molly Johnson, Andy Stochansky, Hawksley Workman, Blue Rodeo, Bobby Wiseman, Big Rude Jake and Lorraine Segato. He leads several diverse groups including his jazz quintet, the Funk Explosion and the improvising electronic groove ensemble Astrogroove.

The new CD Kensington Suite features 10 new original jazz instrumentals and some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians, with Chris Gale sharing the tenor chair with Perry White, Reg Schwager sharing guitar work with Eric St-Laurent, Toronto bassist Artie Roth and Vancouver drummer Joe Poole. Special guests include David Restivo (who plays organ for this outing), percussionist Aline Morales, bassist Brandi Disterheft, percussionist Mafata Lemphane and trombonist Scott Good.
