Local Musicians Perform for Charity
Calgary jazz trumpeter and vocalist Johnny Summers and his quintet are featured as part of the Epilepsy Association of Calgary’s ‘The Jazzy Penguin’, a fundraising event for the local charity to be held on Tuesday, November 20 at the Rose & Crown Pub. The annual fundraising event centres on the jazz theme, with Summers returning again this year.
Johnny Summers first trained in classical trumpet, going on to obtain a music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Calgary in 1999. Forming his own ensembles, bandleader Summers has provided music for local audiences in a variety of formats from small combo to his Big Band orchestra.
The musician released his first CD, The Johnny Summers Quartet, Volume 1 featuring Edmonton pianist Chris Andrew, and Calgary’s Chris Orr (bass), and John DeWaal (drums), the album featuring a mix of originals and jazz standards. His second album, Walk Through the Park (2005), sees the quartet return to take a straight-ahead approach to Summer’s originals composed in the style of the masters, and features guest vocalists Tim Tamashiro and Johanna Silanpaa Groove Project, his latest project, is currently in production mode.
