Canada’s Longest Running Radio Station Celebrates 80 Year Mark

80 Years ago today a national treasure was born when CKUA Radio hit the airwaves, broadcasting out of the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The broadcaster has gone on to become Canada’s longest running public radio station, and is treasured by listeners around the globe.

CKUA has played a significant role in Alberta history, bringing community radio to people throughout the province, helping to launch the careers of many local artists and promoting a vibrant music scene province wide.

To recognize and honor the station’s contribution to the cultural fabric of Alberta, the Provincial Legislature, along with both the cities of Edmonton and Calgary, have officially declared November 21, 2007, CKUA Day.

There have been a series of special events throughout the province this month in celebration of the event. With today being the official birthday of the station, there are special activities planned in Calgary, with festivities along Stephen Avenue Walk as well as at CKUA’s Calgary Newsroom at the Epcor Centre.

CKUA’s on-air personalities Luka Symons, Tom Coxworth, David Ward and Jayme Friedt will be in th 300 block on Stephen Avenue Walk during the afternoon of CKUA Day to meet Calgary listeners.

Calgary listeners will have the opportunity to join CKUA’s staff and on-air talent for cake and coffee, as well as watch host David Ward as he broadcasts live across the province. There will also be a special interview with Mayor Bronconnier. CKUA’s Calgary Newsroom is located on the ground level of the EPCOR CENTRE at 205 – 8 Avenue S.E. next to the Baraka Cafe.
