Cuban-Haitian Singers to Perform With Saxophonist Jane Bunnett
Direct from a three week residency at the Banff Fine Arts Centre and recording sessions with Juno award winner and Grammy nominee Jane Bunnett, Cuban-Haitian vocal group Desandann will perform for 1 night only in Toronto.
Presented by Art of Jazz, the 10 member choir from Camagüey, Cuba, sing a cappella music with echoes of African-American Gospel, Haitian roots music and the large-scale vocal acrobatics of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, all driven by Cuban percussion.
The vocal ensemble is composed mainly of second and third generation Haitians who were born and raised in Cuba, particularly in Camaguey. They preserve the rich cultural patrimony of their parents’ and grandparents’ birthplace through music, performing folkloric and popular songs of Haiti’s yesteryears.
Jane Bunnett, the Toronto soprano saxophonist, flutist and bandleader, has built her career at the crossroads between Cuban music and jazz. Twice nominated for Grammy awards and a fixture of the nominations for Canada’s Juno awards, she has turned her bands into showcases for the finest musical talent from Canada, the United States and Cuba.

This sounds like an interesting event. I’ve enjoyed Jane Bunnett’s albums quite a bit, but I’ve never heard her with this lineup. Did you get a chance to see this concert? I’d love to get some details!
