Trumpeter Joined by Some of Alberta’s Finest Jazz Players for Concerts

Los Angeles trumpeter Carl Saunders visits Edmonton to perform at the Yardbird Suite this weekend, with concerts slated for Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1. Saunders will appear in quintet with some of Alberta’s finest, with Jim Brenan (saxophone), Wayne Feschuk (piano), John Taylor (bass), and Jamie Cooper (drums) joining him for the weekend’s performances.

Carl Saunders, born in 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a jazz trumpeter, composer and educator who worked with Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Bill Holman and Clare Fischer. Trombone player Carl Fontana once called Saunders “the best trumpet player you’ve never heard.”

Picking up the instrument in middle school, Saunders has gone on to become one of the most respected players on the jazz scene today. Mostly known and admired by his peers until he began releasing albums under his own name, Carl Saunders has lived and worked in relative obscurity for many years as he held down chairs in ensemble and big band settings in some of America’s top bands.

Before his first CD release Out Of The Blue, (1996, SNL Records), Carl’s recordings were as a sideman for the bands of Stan Kenton, Bill Holman, Bob Florence, and others. He has since released five more albums, the most recent being released in 2007, Lost Bill Holman Charts (MAMA Records).
