Versatile Jazz Master Leads Group of Local Greats

Calgary bassist Jeremy Coates brings his quartet to the stage at BeatNiq Jazz Club on Friday, December 7 for a night of great jazz. Joined by Tyler Hornby (drums), John Roggensack (saxophone) and Steve Fletcher (piano), the Jeremy Coates Quartet will perform a mix of originals and jazz standards in a wide range of styles.

Jeremy Coates is one of Western Canada’s busiest bass players, with more than fifteen years of performing and teaching experience. Comfortable in the studio, classroom, and concert hall, the multi-instrumentalist is fluent in acoustic bass, electric 4, 5, 6-string basses, as well as tuba, guitar, and drum set.

The versatile musician returned to his hometown of Calgary after attending the University of Colorado in preparation, and now works on the completion of his Doctor of Arts degree in Music Theory and Composition, which involves writing a concerto for bass and chamber orchestra, a set of variations for brass quintet, and a suite for double bass and marimba.

Jeremy can be found in a diverse array of projects, performing and recording with such notables as R&B band The Real Deal, international pop sisters Tegan and Sara, jazz pianist Kristian Alexandrov, and the newly released Smooth Jazz album, Sun Up, by guitarist Gary Wolfe, to name a few. He has toured throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, performing at major jazz venues and festivals, including the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival.

In February 2007, Coates released his first solo album, Notes By Coates (Independent), featuring original jazz and world music performed by fourteen leading Alberta musicians. The album showcases Coates’ mastery on upright and 4,5,6-string basses, and his compositional talents and versatility in the dynamic range of styles from acoustic jazz, to Afro-Cuban, fusion, shuffle, waltz, and ballad.
