Sutton to Appear at Old Mill, IAJE Conference

Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton will make two appearances in Toronto this month, the first at the Old Mill on January 10th, and the following evening at the John Bassett Theatre as part of the upcoming IAJE conference.

Sutton, who formed her own group 14 years ago, will appear with band members Christian Jacob (piano), bassists Kevin Axt and Trey Henry, and drummer Ray Brinker.

A graduate Berklee College of Music in Boston, Sutton’s career took off when she relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-90s, where she has become a fixture in the studios and on the L.A. jazz scene.

A semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition in 1998, Tierney’s debut solo album Introducing Tierney Sutton, was nominated for Indie Award for ‘Best Jazz Vocal Album’. Later that same year she signed with the Telarc jazz label, and has since released six more critically acclaimed albums and has been a familiar name on Billboard’s top ten charts ever since. Her most recent, On the Other Side (2007), was hailed by Business Week as “A Masterpiece.”

Sutton debuted at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops in February 2005, and in December 2005 I’m with the Band was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of ‘Best Jazz Vocal Album’ and won JazzWeek’s ‘Vocalist of the Year Award’. Sutton has also appeared at The Hollywood Bowl, Jazz at Lincoln Centre and has appeared at numerous major international jazz festivals.

A versatile studio singer, Tierney’s voice was recently featured on Lions Gate’s hit film The Cooler, starring William H. Macy and Alec Baldwin. She can also be heard in Paramount’s Twisted, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Andy Garcia and Ashley Judd. And in 2004, Tierney and her band scored the independent feature film Blue in Green, which was released by the Unica Project. Tierney’s unique voice is also regularly featured in commercials representing such organizations as BMW, Coca Cola, Dodge and J.C. Penney.

An active educator, Tierney has served in the Jazz Studies Department at the University of Southern California, as well as giving workshops and clinics throughout the world.
