Right Place, Right Time for New Orleans Music Legend

Saskatoon blues fans will have a taste of funky New Orleans gumbo on Saturday, when the inimitable Dr. John appears in concert at TCU Place – Centennial Hall.

Dr. John, otherwise known as Mac Rebennack, is recognized as a living legend. The funk-meister’s groovy blend of blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots have been bringing audiences to their feet during thousands of live shows over the past 50 years.

The multiple Grammy award-winning musician began his career during the 1950s as writer and guitarist on recordings by iconic New Orleans musicians Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford.

Following a gun incident which left him unable to play guitar, he took up organ and piano, relocating to the west in the 1960s. Working as a session musician, he appeared on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin among the many. He also launched his solo career, birthing the enigmatic persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper along with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris. Other career highlights include his Sun, Moon and Herbs (1971) album, which included cameos from Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger and 1973’s In The Right Place, with Right Place Wrong Time and Such A Night” hitting the top of the charts.

Over the years the legendary musician has won numerous accolades and awards, including Grammy’s in 1989, 1992, 1996 and 2000 as well as five nominations, and in 2004 his tribute to the city of New Orleans, N’awlinz Dis Dat or D’udda, was awarded the prestigious Académie Charles Cros 57ème Palmarès award in France.

Dr. John continues to write, arrange and produce albums while maintaining a busy tour schedule.
