Canadian Tour

Group to Perform Concerts in Edmonton, Calgary

Montreal jazz trio Fieldtrip heads out on a second Canadian tour next month, making several stops in Western Canada to perform, including two dates in Alberta at Edmonton’s Yardbird Suite Feb. 9 and Calgary’s BeatNiq Feb. 15 & 16.

Comprised of Colin Power (alto saxophone), Patrick Reid (bass) and Calgary native Mark Nelson (drums), the young group has been rapidly gaining attention for their debut self-titled release of 2007 Fieldtrip, and their diverse repertoire of original compositions and interpretations of jazz, folk, hip-hop, rock and popular music.

Formed in September, 2005, the group (all McGill grads) was supported by the PEI Council of the Arts in recording an album of their original works. They completed the self-titled CD while attending the Career Development Residency Program at the Banff Centre on a scholarship last spring.

Fieldtrip was released immediately thereafter and followed up by the group’s first national tour. The album features compositions by bassist Patrick Reid inspired by his experiences volunteering and traveling in Africa. Fieldtrip has gone on to receive rave reviews from many of the nation’s top jazz critics and spent several weeks at the top of the college radio jazz charts.

All in their early twenties, Fieldtrip has already asserted themselves as one of the most promising, unique and exciting ensembles on the Canadian jazz scene. Having over fifty performances under their belt this year alone, they have also had opportunities to collaborate with many of Canada’s jazz greats including Andy Milne, Chet Doxas, Jim Head, Mike Allen and Kelly Jefferson.
