Jazz, Improvisation and Creativity the Cornerstone Aaron Leaney 3
Local jazz saxophonist and composer Aaron Leaney celebrates the release of his new CD Aaron Leaney 3, on Friday & Saturday, Jan. 18 & 19 at Beat Niq in Calgary.
Aaron Leaney 3, recorded live in November 2007, features four new compositions by Leaney, who plays tenor and alto saxophones as well as clarinet on the album and is joined by Tom Golub (acoustic bass) and Chris Dadge (drums mixed with electronics) to form the trio.
Leaney’s music fits solidly in the Nu Jazz movement with his original compositions arranged for saxophone, bass, and drums, and was described recently as “a found sound, improvisational music, creative music, a heavy cocktail of all three.”
Saxophonist Leaney and drummer Dadge met as teens in Calgary, forming their sound on local bandstands and developing new material. Their first release, Duo features the two collaborating on free-jazz improvisations. Last year they met up with Edmonton bassist Thom Golub to form the Aaron Leaney 3, with an emphasis on creative, improvised playing and composition. The Aaron Leaney 3 is the first album for the popular trio.
