Duo Plays Original and Exotic Blend of Jazz, World, Classical

Calgary Ensemble Red Venus Blue Tango premieres their new name and repertoire of original music in two performances, Saturday, Jan. 26 at Grace Presbyterian Church, and on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Beat Niq.

Red Venus Blue Tango is formed by Morag Northey Taylor (composer, cellist), and Brent Van Dusen (composer, percussionist).

Formerly known as And So It Goes, Red Venus Blue Tango is as exotic as it sounds, with its eclectic fusion of classical, jazz, folk, pop and world music creating rich soundscapes as the foundation for improvisation. The artists use a blend of cello, percussion, voice, keyboards, and electronics to bring their shared compositions to life.

Originally from Vancouver, Morag Northey Taylor has been based out of Calgary for over 17 years. She founded the VAD Ensemble in 1991, a consortium of regarded musicians who perform in a multitude of formats under various names, acting as leader, soloist, chamber musician and arranger. She is also frequently found in classical orchestras throughout North America such as the Austin Symphony and Calgary Philharmonic. Northey Taylor’s numerous composition credits include dance and film.

Calgary’s Brent Van Dusen boast long lists of composition, performance and recording credits, as is one of the city’s top composer, percussionist and educators. The innovative composer has been a resident artist at the Banff Centre on numerous occasions, and has composed and arranged for musical ensembles, dance, theatre, film and video. The versatile musician has performed in a variety formats from the Calgary Philharmonic to world music, jazz, and pop. Brent is a sought after studio musician and composer, having released 8 albums as composer, arranger or producer, and 34 albums as featured percussionist. Recent performance credits include ATP’s “Joni Mitchell: River” and the Blue Collar Dance “The Paper Bag Princess”. Brent is also involved with organizing the Epcor Centre’s annual Solstice Beat event as well as composing/performing for Springboard Dance’s ‘Vertical Summer’ in Olympic Plaza.

The multi-talented violinist Jonathan Lewis (Plaid Tongued Devils) will be joining Red Venus Blue Tango for the Calgary performances.
