Award Winners 2008

Colin James, Downchild Big Winners

The Maple Blues Awards ceremony took place last night in Toronto, with Colin James and members of the Downchild Blues Band walking away big winners.

Vancouver blues guitarist Colin James, a multiple Juno-winner, received Maple Blues Awards for entertainer, electric act and recording of the year with his Little Big Band.

Five awards went to members of the veteran group Downchild Blues Band of Toronto, including Best Male Vocalist, Best Drummer, and Best Bass, Horn and Keyboard players.

Harry Manx captured Socan’s Songwriter of the Year award and shared the award with Kevin Breit for Acoustic Act of the Year.

Gala host Dawn Tyler Watson was named Female Vocalist of the Year while Winnipeg’s legendary Big Dave McLean was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award.

Other winners included Toronto’s Jack de Keyzer for Best Guitarist, David Rotundo for Best Harmonica player, Halifax’s Thom Swift for Best New Artist and claimed the $1,000 Rising Star award, and Watermelon Slim for Best International Artist.

Nominees are selected by a panel of blues experts from across Canada, and winners are selected by the online votes of Canadian fans.
