Music, Dance and Capoeira Featured in Festival
The 2008 Brazilian Carnaval gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Quincy’s in Calgary. Featured headliners include the six-piece Bombolesse (Montreal), Eduardo Mendoca & Joshua Wilson from Seattle’s Show Brazil ensemble, the Samba Brasil Dance Group, and a caporeira presentation by Calgary Capoeria Ache Brasil.
Montreal-based Bombolesse is a 6-piece Latin group who perform a fusion of Brazil’s popular music such as Pagode, Baiao, and Samba reggae with contemporary jazz and rock rhythms. The Canadian-Brazilian ensemble has toured Mexico, USA, Canada, Ecuador, Colombia, and Africa, and released their debut CD Bombolesse, Musique Bresillianisee “Pucha-pucha” (The Bros Disc) in May of 2006.
Brazilian born guitarist/singer Eduardo Mendonça, who now resides in the US, is more recently known for his work with the Seattle-based band Show Brazil. A multiple award-winning artist, Mendonca was recently named Outstanding Brazilian Male Singer based in the US by the Brazilian International Press Award (2007) in Florida. He is joined by fellow Seattle musician Josh Wilson on keyboards, and Calgary based musicians, Mario Allende (drums), Daniel (bass), Ricardo Fonseca (trumpet), Michael Fijal (trumpet), Edmonton’s Tucaaue Alvares (percussion) and special guest Maninho (Toronto).
There will be a matinee performance for children with Eduardo Menonca from 4 to 6 pm followed by the evening program at 7:30, with two featured bands.
