Saxophonist Ralph Bowen returns to the Yardbird Suite Feb. 23 & 24 for the first time since his 1994 visit with the Free Trade ensemble which toured Canada in support of their Juno award winning recording of the same name. Bowen will be appearing at the Suite with the Chris Andrew Trio, led by the pianist and featuring Steve Kirby (bass) and Sandro Dominelli (drums).

Born in Guelph, Ontario, Ralph Bowen first made his mark on the Canadian jazz scene before relocating to New York in the mid-1980s, gaining acclaim in the U.S. for the four recordings he did for Bluenote as co-leader of OTB-Out of the Blue. He has performed with dozens of the finest jazz musicians and singers on the scene – Johnny Griffin, Renee Rosnes, Paquito d’Rivera, Michael Brecker, Freddie Hubbard, Rob McConnell, Maria Schneider, Chucho Valdes and Tony Williams. His discography of over 50 titles includes collaborations with Orrin Evans, Michel Camilo, and Horace Silver. As an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, composer/arranger, and performer, Bowen’s impact on audiences continues to expand.

Making his first appearance in Edmonton will be bassist Steve Kirby. Steve has also toured, recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Jazz Center Orchestra, Abbey Lincoln, Regina Carter, Jacky Terrason and James Carter. Since 2003, he has been the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Manitoba. Kirby has been instrumental in rejuvenating the jazz scene in Winnipeg.

Leading the group is Edmonton pianist/composer Chris Andrew, one of the nation’s top jazz musicians. Andrews boasts a long list of performance credits including Joshua Redman, Sonny Fortune, Thomas Chapin, Bud Shank, and Pete Christlieb among the many. Highly versatile, Andrews has collaborated on more than 30 CDs and is also a key member of groups Bomba and the Hutchinson/Andrew trio, both Western Canadian music awards nominees.

Juno nominee and WCMA award-winning Edmonton drummer Sandro Dominelli is one of Canada’s most in-demand players, with performance/recording credits including Mike Murley, Rob McConnell, Guido Basso, Dave Restivo, Kirk MacDonald, Mike Rudd, Phil Dwyer, Hugh Fraser, Ian McDougall, Cambell Ryga, Doug Riley, Don Thompson, Ranee Lee, D.
