Calgary’s Decidedly Jazz Danceworks Fundraiser Features Live Funk Band

Calgary’s premier dance company Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD) presents another of their memorable fundraising events this Saturday, March 1 at MacEwan Ballroom, with Possessed all funked up, a dance party with live music featuring Edmonton’s funk group Superband.

DJD is known for their high-energy performances that feature live music created by local musician/composers and has featured such renowned artists such as vocalists Mark Murphy and Jackie Richardson along with ensembles led by such greats as Kristian Alexandrov, Tyler Hornby and George Koller.

After 19 years of presenting the Black and White Ball, DJD is taking a new direction with their annual fundraising event with the presentation of Possessed all funked up. The evening will feature the funky dance party with the live band followed by music by a local DJ. The company dancers will be on hand throughout the evening and are expected to perform.

The high-powered Superband is a 9-piece band led by bassist Jay Cairns, with Jamie Cooper, singers Ian Alleyne and Orville Cameron (Hi-Phoniqs), guitarist Peter Bell (guitar) Doug Organ, and a horn section. The group performs an entertaining journey through the history of funk, with a songlist culled from legendary writers such as Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley, P-Funk, and Sly Stone.
