Sextet Performs Innovative Blend of All Original Modern and Classic Jazz

Bassist and composer Michael Herring takes his Toronto based group Vertigo on a Canadian tour this month, adding the talented voice of New York alto saxophonist David Binney to the group.

Vertigo is formed by Toronto’s Quinsin Nachoff (tenor saxophone, clarinets), William Carn (trombone), Don Scott (guitar), Nick Fraser (drums), and bandleader Michael Herring (double bass).

The sextet sound was born of a collaborative performance when the group appeared at Toronto’s Rex Jazz & Blues Bar with saxophonist Binney. Taking it into the studio, the sextet released their debut CD, Coniferous Revenge in 2006, an innovative modern jazz mix of groove-driven, composed and improvised elements with hints of reggae, electonica, 20th Century classical, folk and grunge rock. Herring’s strikingly original concepts are influenced by cutting edge musicians such as Dave Holland, Drew Gress and Chris Potter yet infused with the classic sixties sextet sound of Wayne Shorter and Booker Little.

The album captured rave reviews in jazz circles and was chosen as one of the Top 5 Debut Albums of the year by All About Jazz New York, and was selected best of the year lists including Irwin Block’s at the Montreal Gazette and Geoff Chapman’s at the Toronto Star.
