Vancouver Jazz Master to Appear with Calgary Jazz Greats
Saxophonist Campbell Ryga will be appearing in Calgary as a presentation of the Jazz Is Society on Friday & Saturday, April 18 & 19, at Cantos Music Foundation. Ryga will be joined by Calgary jazz greats Sheldon Zandboer (piano), John Hyde (bass) and Tyler Hornby (drums).
Born in Edmonton in 1961, Campbell grew up in Summerland, BC, and eventually settled in Vancouver, where he now makes his home.
Ryga has been performing since the early 80’s, touring the globe on 19 occasions, including four headline appearances at the Havana International Jazz Festival. He is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Hugh Fraser Quintet, touring extensively with the group since their formation 1981. He has also appeared on four separate occasions at the prestigious Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho and crossed Canada on 24 tours.
Campbell was honored with Jazz Report Magazine’s Award ‘Canada’s Alto Saxophonist of the Year 2000′, has received 3 Juno Awards and two nominations, has received a Grammy nomination and has twice received the Western Canadian Music Award in the Jazz category.
For this performance Ryga will be backed by some of the finest players in the audience, with Zandboer, Hyde and Hornby all acclaimed performers, recording artists and educators.
