Smokin’ Blues in the “Heart of the New West”

Organizers have announced the headline roster for the 4th annual Calgary International Blues Festival, slated to run August 7-10, 2008, at Pumphouse Park in Calgary.

The family-friendly event will feature a stellar cast of blues veterans along with up-and-coming stars on the outdoor mainstage. Other featured events include the signature Twilight Blues Series dance parties held nightly on the festival site once mainstage closes, as well as workshops and other special events to be announced.

Among the more than 100 musicians slated to perform mainstage over four days are legendary California based blues-rockers Canned Heat, British blues greats Savoy Brown, iconic Texas bluesmen The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Louisianna’s reigning Cajun king, Buckwheat Zydeco.

Other acts include Chicago blues guitar legends Lou Pride & the Rooster Blues Band and Roy Hytower, who will perform with local greats Bill Dowey & the Blues Devils. West-coast blues singer E.C. Scott, zydeco king C.J. Chenier & Red Hot Louisiana Band, and Texas gospel singer Panzie Johnson join the powerhouse roster.

Blues giants from across Canada include Toronto vocalist Dione Taylor with the Canadian All-Star Blues Band featuring guitarists Jake Langley and Jack Semple, Winnipeg blues-rockers South Thunderbird, harmonica man Sherman Doucette from Vernon, B.C., and Calgary vocalist/drummer Donald Ray Johnson.

Among the stars of tomorrow are the youthful Calgary guitarist Lindsay Ell, who has been mentored by legendary Canadian music legend Randy Bachman, and the winner of the Calgary Midwinter Bluesfest’s “Singing the Blues’ competition, Kirby Sewell (Calgary).

Founded by producers Maurice Ginzer and Cindy McLeod, the Calgary Bluesfest has quickly grown to become one of the largest blues festivals west of Ottawa.
