Alexandrov to Perform with Local Jazz Greats

Pianist Kristian Alexandrov returns to Calgary from his new home of Vancouver for appearances at Beat Niq Friday & Saturday, May 8 & 9, in celebration of his new CD Akoustika. Joining Kristian for the dates are local greats Ben Harries (bass), Andy Ericson (drums) and on Friday night only, vocalist Shannon Gaye.

Akoustika features Alexandrov in an acoustic trio format, showcasing his original contemporary jazz compositions recorded live off the floor at the Calgary Opera Centre. The pared down format provides the perfect backdrop for his rich and complex jazz compositions and Bulgarian modes.

Winner of the 2008 Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for Best Pianist, Kristian Alexandrov was born into a family of musicians in Sofia, Bulgaria. His parents enrolled him in classical piano classes at the age of four, and at six years old Kristian was accepted into the prestigious L. Pipkov School of Music where he completed twelve years of intense training as a pianist and percussionist.

Since moving to Canada in 1995, composer, performer, producer, clinician and studio musician Kristian has become an integral member of the Canadian music scene. He spent ten years with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ as composer and musical director as well as shared the stage with such Canadian and International musicians as Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Alain Caron, Bob Mintzer, Jens Lindemann, George Koller, Joshua Hilberman, Senator Tommy Banks, Tap Tel Aviv, Shannon Gaye and Toronto’s own Jackie Richardson.
