Shakura S’Aida to Headline Noon Hour Celebration
The Toronto Blues Society will celebrate its 23rd birthday on Wednesday, May 21, with a noon hour concert and celebration featuring singer Shakura S’Aida. The event will take place at Young Dundas Square in Toronto.
Born in Brooklyn, Shakura S’Aida has been spending her time between Toronto and Switzerland since her family moved from the U.S. when she was eight years old. A prized member of the Canadian music scene for the past 20 years, the multi-lingual artist is a busy musician and actress, appearing on dozens of stages throughout the nation and abroad.
As a solo artist, Shakura’s work spans jazz, blues and R&B. Some of her career highlights include an appearance the Apollo Theatre in New York, three nominations by the Toronto Blues Society for ‘Female Vocalist of the Year’ (2004-2008) and a nomination for ‘Entertainer of the Year’ (2008). She has been featured with such legendary artists as Jimmy Smith and Ruth Brown as well as sung backup with Patti Labelle and Rita McNeil.
Familiar to jazz and blues audiences in both Europe and North America, Shakura recently took second place at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
The release of Shakura’s debut blues album Blueprint earned strong critical applause for her charismatic, warm performance and powerful voice. She is also a guest vocalist on Bill King and Saturday Night Fish Fry’s Rhythm and Soul and the group’s newly-released CD Dirt Road Blues.
