Vancouver Jazz Greats to Back Weed for Release Parties
Vancouver saxophonist Cory Weeds releases his debut CD Big Weeds on Friday & Saturday, June 6 & 7 at Cellar Jazz in Vancouver. Joining him for the dates are Oliver Gannon (guitar), Chris Gestrin (Hammond B3) and Jesse Cahill (drums).
Big Weeds is Weeds first CD as leader and was recorded in January 2008 with New York City trio Peter Bernstein (guitar), Mike Ledonne (organ) and Joe Farnsworth (drums). The CD features seven Weeds originals along with the classic standard Paper Moon and a very very funky Darben The Redd Foxx.
Cory Weeds is an inspiration to many who make their living in the jazz music industry, a shining example of what dedication, passion and strong business savvy can do when combined into one dynamic package.
Directing his energy and talents into the creation of a hub for jazz, Weeds launched The Cellar in July of 2001, his hybrid jazz club/recording studio that has become world renowned for its excellence in jazz presentations and catalogue of recorded jazz artists.
A graduate of North Texas University where attended on a scholarship, Weeds is a highly regarded musician and boasts a long list of performance credits including such international names as Lou Donaldson, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, Harold Mabern, and Canadian giants Brad Turner, Hugh Fraser, and Don Thompson among the many.
While attending university Weeds got his start in radio, hosting two shows at KNTU in the Denton-Dallas-Fort Worth area. Today he hosts the ‘Chasin the Train’ program on 102.7 FM, a weekly ninety-minute program out of Vancouver.
Cellar Jazz, the record label founded by Weeds in 2001, was created from dozens of tapes of performances at the Cellar Jazz club, now numbers over 7 years and 40 titles, including its newest addition, Big Weeds.
