Trumpeter Friesen Brings His Quintet to Regina Inn
Presented by the Regina Jazz Society, Montreal based trumpeter/arranger Derek Friesen brings his quintet of Jeff Richardi (tenor saxophone), Jeff McLeod (piano), Alain Bourgouis (drums) and Kevin Fallis (bass) to the stage for a night of jazz, funk and more. The group will appear at the Wascana Room at the Regina Inn on Friday, May 23rd.
Born in Saskatoon and raised in Regina, Derek Friesen was was a runner-up in both soloist and lead trumpet competitions at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Six months later, he was offered a full scholarship to attend Boston’s Berklee School of Music. He opted instead to stay in Canada and is now finishing his third year of a Jazz Performance Degree at McGill University. In Montreal Derek performs with the McGill Jazz Orchestra, the Montreal All-City Big Band (lead trumpet), the New Groove Orchestra, and various small groups.
The youthful quintet is a cross-border collective, with saxophonist Richardi hailing from Foxborough, Massachussetts; pianist Mcleod from Rochester, New York; drummer Bourgeois from Moncton, NB; and bassist Fallis from Toronto.
