Russell Jackson Band Backs Cooper for Calgary Shows

New Orleans guitar virtuoso Selwyn Cooper will appear in Calgary as part of the Blues Masters Concert Series on Friday & Saturday, May 30 & 31. Backing Cooper for the performance are local blues heroes, the Russell Jackson Band.

Selwyn Cooper is perhaps best known for his Zydeco work as an alumnus of the Buckwheat Zydeco group, with whom he contributed to two Grammy Award-winning albums, wore out 3 passports touring the U.S., Canada, the mid-East, Africa and Europe, appears in television ads for Close-Up toothpaste and L.A. Lotteries and on soundtracks for such feature films as the 1987 ‘The Big Easy’ and 1982’s ‘Delta Heat’.

Aside from his work with Buckwheat Zydeco, Selywn Cooper has racked up a pretty impressive list of his own credits, having shared the stage and/or recorded with such legends as Marcia Ball, Big Mama Thornton, Clifton Chenier, Marva Wright, Major Handy and Joe Cocker as well as opened more shows for B.B. King than he can count.

In 1995 Cooper, who has appeared at the New Orleans Jazzfest more than a dozen times, was recognized with the New Orleans Critic’s Choice Award, which he shared with a frequent musical collaborator, soul singer Carol Fran. In the 1990’s Selwyn was one of the performers chosen to perform in Paris for the World Peace conference attended by leaders from around the globe.

Born in Memphis, raised in Wichita and now based out of Vancouver, bassist Russell Jackson has toured and recorded with such blues greats as Charlie Musselwhite, Katie Webster, Matt Murphy, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Roy Gaines as well as headlining with his own contemporary blues & funk outfit, the Russell Jackson Band.
