Concert Five: Hardcore to Feature Regional Free Jazz Masters
Edmonton’s creative jazz community presents another Explorations Concert in their ongoing series on Friday, May 30 at Stanley A. Milner Library Theatre.
Produced by the gifted pianist, composer and educator Dr. Glen Halls, the Explorations Concerts Series features leading members of Canadian free jazz, or creative music. The concerts explore real-time aspects of music creation and feature pre-existing and specially formed projects as well as groups that are literally chosen by drawing names from a hat for a spontaneous ensemble formation. Performances might include graphical scores, improvisations directed by flash cards or the time constraint dictated by a clock sitting center stage. Previous concerts have merged free jazz, world and classical music genres.
Concert Five: Hardcore will comprise of two parts, with Set One featuring Toronto free jazz drummer Mark Hundevad along with Edmonton’s Glen Halls (piano, and William Jamieson (saxophone) for some “high intensity stream-of-concsiousness improvisation.
Set Two: Braintrust ensemble features pianist Halls and drummer Hundevad (drums) with Edmonton Rock/metal bassist Jayson Ashenmayer and guitarist Kyle Cullen.
The concert series is funded in part by an Explorations grant from the Edmonton Cultural Capital Program.
Admission is $15. Students and seniors. Tickets at the door or at Tix on the Square.
