Jazz Vocalist Lends Her Talent and Time to Presentation House

Kate Hammett-Vaughan performs for Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love, an annual fundraising gala for the North Vancouver centre Presentation House, on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m.

Named for the Cole Porter song, the evening’s performance will feature music by Porter as well as classic jazz standards by some of the great composers of the 20th century, including George Gershwin and Duke Ellington.

Joining Kate for the performance are pianist Miles Black, bassist André Lachance, drummer Craig Scott and saxophonist Dave Say, marking the first time the busy musicians have performed as an ensemble.

Miles Black will be playing a prized Fazioli piano, on loan from Vancouver’s Showcase Pianos. The Italian-based Fazioli hand-builds pianos, each taking three years to complete. Herbie Hancock plays a Fazioli, having had one built especially for him.

Kate Hammett-Vaughn is a Juno-nominated Vancouver artist and teacher. The well-known jazz vocalist has received numerous nominations from the Canadian Independent Music Awards and from the National Jazz Awards, including best jazz vocalist. She is also a sought-after voice educator, teaching at both Capilano and Vancouver Community Colleges.

She has a busy month ahead with the release of her new CD, Imagination, recorded live at Vancouver’s The Cellar jazz club. The album follows her 2007 release So Lucky To Be Me, a duo recording featuring Hammett-Vaughan and Vancouver jazz guitarist Bill Coon.

On the roster each year since the inception in 1985, Kate will also be performing at the upcoming TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival June 20-29 at various venues in the city. This year she will be making three festival appearances, including June 22 with Bill Coon from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Taproom at Granville Island Brewing; as part of the Kate Hammett-Vaughan Trio on June 24 from 9 to 11:30 p.m. at O’Doul’s Restaurant; and, on June 25 as part of the Kate Hammett-Vaughan Quintet from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Ironworks.

In July, Kate will act as MC at a Leonard Cohen tribute event featuring Jann Arden and Serena Ryder. The Edmonton engagement follows similar shows held in London, Berlin and New York. Hammett-Vaughan will also be performing.

Her busy performance schedule is set to continue into the fall when she’ll perform as part of The Cellar’s artist in residence series.

Tickets for Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall in Love are $70 and include the concert, silent and live auctions, hors d’oeuvres, door prizes, and a membership to Presentation House Theatre which includes two tickets to a preview presentation of the 2009 Third Street Theatre Series. Box office: 604-990-3474.
