Saxophonist Returns to Native Calgary to Celebrate Release
Saxophonist Mark DeJong returns to his native home of Calgary to celebrate the release of his debut CD, The Unknown, on June 20 & 21 at Beat Niq. The album, released on Chronograph Records, features DeJong on tenor with the Outer Bridge Ensemble, formed by Steve Hudson (piano/wurlitzer), Mike Noordzy (bass), Jerome Jennings (drums), and David Freeman (percussion).
The Unknown, recorded in Brooklyn, NY, features 6 original compositions by Mark as well as two arrangements of the classics Smile (C.Chaplin) and People Will Say We’re In Love (R.Rodgers).
Mark holds degrees in saxophone performance from the University of Calgary, (BMus) and jazz performance from Rutgers University (MMus). He is active as a performer and clinician throughout North America, and has appeared and adjudicated at major festivals, recorded for CBC Radio, and has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Lennie Pickett, Loren Schoenberg, Kenny Wheeler, Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, Ralph Bowen, Sean Jones, Hugh Fraser, Jens Lindemann, Tommy Banks, and PJ Perry. As a performer, Mark has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, and in 2003, Fukui, Japan with the Rutgers Big Band. Mark is a founding member of the Steve Hudson Quintet, an all-original jazz ensemble that performs regularly in New York and New Jersey. Mark is currently on the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan, where he teaches Jazz Studies.
The Outer Bridge Ensemble is an innovative group led by stellar pianist and acclaimed composer Steve Hudson. Hudson’s ensemble has toured with assistance from the Canada Council, and has released two independent recordings, “Outer Bridge” and “Seamless”. The group will also be joining DeJong to participate in the Saskatchewan International Jazz Festival as educators for the High School Jazz Intensive.
