Artists to appear as part of Grandmasters Series
John Pizzarelli Quartet featuring special guest Peter Appleyard have been announced as added to the TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival lineup. The group will perform as part of the Grandmasters Series on Saturday, June 28, replacing French pianist and composer Michel Legrand, who canceled for health reasons.
With a career spanning over five decades, Peter Appleyard is one of the world’s leading vibraphonists. Appleyard has performed/recorded with such luminaries as Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Beginning his career as a drummer in British dance and RAF bands, he moved in 1949 to Bermuda and in 1951 to Toronto, where he began playing vibraphone. Named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1992, Appleyard came to international notice in jazz during the early 1970s as a member of Benny Goodman’s sextet. Today, he is acknowledged as one of the top five’s vibraphonists.
Guitarist John Pizzarelli has released nearly two dozen albums as leader and appeared on more than 40 albums by artists including James Taylor, Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole and Bucky Pizzarelli. The modern jazz master is internationally renowned musician is known for the cool jazz flavour he brings to performances and recordings.
Quartetto Guido Basso will open, featuring John Sherwood on piano, Steve Wallace on bass, Brian Barlow on drums and Guido Basso on trumpet.
The TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival runs June 20-29.
