Vancouver’s Brad Turner & Calgary’s Manic Thematic Trio in Concert

Juno award-winning trumpeter Brad Turner will be a featured guest with Manic Thematic Trio on Thursday, August 21 at Ironwood Stage in Calgary. Manic Thematic Trio is Ralf Buschmeyer (guitar), John Hyde (bass), Andy Ericson (drums).

Brad Turner’s talents as a trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer make him one of Canada´s most-in-demand musicians. Brad has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler, Michael Moore and Reneé Rosnes, among the many, while his groups have opened for McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, Clarke Terry and Diana Krall.

As leader, Brad has released five albums, four with his quartet, the most recent being the What Is (2005) and one with his piano trio, Question the Answer (2004), which was nominated for a 2005 Canadian Urban Music Award and a 2006 Canadian Indie Music award.

In 1997 and 1998 Brad won Juno Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album recognizing his work in the internationally established electric jazz group Metalwood.

Winner of National Jazz Awards for Jazz Trumpeter of the Year (1999), Jazz Composer of the Year (2000 and 2002), Brad was awarded Musician of the Year for 2005.

Manic Thematic

Currently serving on the faculty of the Mount Royal College Jazz program, Ralf Buschmeyer is a graduate of Mohawk College, where he studied with Lorne Lofsky. He has toured across Canada as sideman and as co-leader of jazz fusion group Terrain. A Godin Guitars artist, Ralf has performed with PJ Perry, Guido Basso, Ingrid Jensen, and Jack Semple, to name a few.

John Hyde’s numerous recording, arranging and producing credits include Amos Garrett, Sheri- D Wilson, Senator Tommy Banks, Tim Tamashiro, Craig Korth and Anne Loree, among them. A busy sideman, John’s work shines in multiple styles, having taken part in jazz projects with Marion McPartland, Bill Watrous, Oliver Jones and Mark Murphy; pop music with K.D. Lang and Jann Arden; classical settings with Land’s End Chamber Ensemble, New Works Calgary and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra; for dance companies such as with Decidedly Jazz Dance and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet; and theatre, including the recent production of The River (based on Joni Mitchell).

Andy Ericson has performed in Calgary for over 20 years, and is an in-demand sideman with credits including projects with Kristian Alexandrov, Rubin de Toledo, Gary Wolfe, Jeremy Coates, and more. Ericson also owns and operates a very busy recording studio.
