Trumpeter Gary Guthman Performs Hits of Big Band Giants

Calgary Philharmonic kicks off it’s new POPS Season with Swing, Swing, Swing, featuring Victoria trumpeter Gary Guthman, who will perform the hits of the Big Band Era including the music of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and more.

Under the baton of conductor Pierre Simard, Guthman and the CPO will perform, on Friday & Saturday, Sept. 12 & 13 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall at the Performing Arts Centre in Calgary.

Classically trained Guthman originally hails from Portland, Oregon, where he attended university. He performed during the 80’s with the Dorsey Brothers Big Band, Stan Kenton Orchestra, Don Ellis Orchestra and Louis Bellson before moving to Canada where he toured coast to coast as soloist and with his “New Swing Orchestra”.

Since the early 90s’, Gary Guthman has performed for audiences throughout the world with his “Tribute to Harry James”, “Trumpet Greats”, and “Salute to Swing” in concert halls, jazz festivals and with Symphony Pops.

From 1999 -2002, Gary was the star in the award winning Big Band Musical Theatre production of “Forever Swing” which toured in the United States and Canada.

In January of 2004, in his premier performance, Gary headlined at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra Conducted by Skitch Henderson.

Recently, he presented his Big Band Swing production entitled ‘Swingmatism’ at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, receiving rave reviews and standing ovations at every one of the 13 performances.

Over the last three years, Gary Guthman has been performing in Europe just completing his 3rd European concert tour. As Gary brings back the exciting sounds of the Swing era to audiences young and old, he has become affectionately known to Eastern European audiences as the new “King of Swing”. Gary says, “It wasn’t my idea, the press just grabbed hold. I hope Benny Goodman isn’t watching!
