WCMA Gala Kicked Off With Tom Banks Tribute

The Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA) were handed out last night at the annual Gala event held at the Myer Horowitz Theatre in Edmonton. The awards recognize top recording artists from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon in 19 categories.

Winnipeg indie pop group the Weakerthans dominated the event, taking home three awards for Outstanding Independent Album, Songwriters of the Year and Video of the Year for their latest album Reuinion Tour.

The show opened with a tribute to the life and career of Edmonton jazz icon Tommy Banks, who was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Fellow inductees were Vancouver’s Spirit of the West, who also performed during the evening.

Feist, k.d. lang and Nickelback all received International Achievement Awards for their outstanding contributions.

Vancouver’s Altered Laws captured the Outstanding Jazz Recording for Metaphora, the album featuring Latin, pop, Brazilian, mainstream and avant-garde jazz.

Saskatchewan’s Little Miss Higgins won the award for Outstanding Blues Recording for her Junction City. Winnipeg based Twilight Hotel captured Outstanding Roots Recording – Duo/Group for Highway Prayer , while Alberta’s Corb Lund won the Outstanding Roots Recording – Solo for his Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!

Other winners included: Paul Brandt, who took home the Outstanding Country Recording award for Risk, Winnipeg rockers The Liptonians taking the Outstanding Pop Recording for their self-titled debut album, and State of Shock’s Life, Love and Lies won Outstanding Rock Recording.

Outstanding Francophone Recording: Ariane Mahryke Lemire, Double Entendre.

Outstanding Instrumental Recording: Bob Evans, 4 on 6.

Outstanding Jazz Recording: Altered Laws, Metaphora.

Outstanding Pop Recording: The Liptonians, Self-Titled.

Outstanding Rock Recording: State of Shock, Life, Love & Lies.
