Latin Jazz Giants in Calgary for Fundraising Event

Legendary Latin Jazz giants Flora Purim and Airto Moreira will appear in Calgary at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 5th. Purim and Moreira will be joined by a 5-piece band for the performance.

The concert is being presented as part of a fundraising effort to help the victim of a shooting in Calgary’s Chinatown on September 16th, 2008. Brazilian tourist José Ribamar Ribeiro Neto was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle and was blinded as a result. During the evening a silent auction will also be held. The event is supported by the Brazilian Community Association of Alberta, who are taking donations and selling concert tickets online at http://www.bcaab.org/Neto/Fundraising_CONCERT.htm

Grammy nominated vocalist Flora Purim is renowned for her six-octave voice and distinct sound, which crosses traditional Brazilian music and mainstream jazz. Married to percussionist Airto Moreira, fellow leading light of Brazilian music, the couple have helped shape modern jazz and are pioneers of fusion.

Flora Purim and Airto Moreira have worked with innumerable music greats such as Stan Getz, Gil Evans, Duke Pearson, Santana, Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart, Joe Zawinul, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock and Dizzie Gillespie among them, as well as the iconic group Return to Forever with Chick Corea, Joe Farrell and Stanley Clarke. for more info visit http://www.myspace.com/airtoflora
