All-Star Quintet Stars in Concert Performance

Jazz Regina features its annual Christmas event on Saturday, December 27, when the Homecoming Concert will take place at the Wascana Ballroom in the Regina Inn.

The traditional event brings home an all-star ensemble of musicians for the Christmas 2008 event, which features a quintet led by pianist Jeff McLeod, along with Donnie Kennedy (alto saxophone), Greg Duncan (guitar), Graham Purse (bass) and Jon McCaslin (drums).

Pianist Jeff McLeod now lives in Rochester, NY, where he’s finishing his Master’s degree at Eastman College and is soon to become an instructor. A familiar face on the Saskatchewan music scene, McLeod has shared the stage with a diversity of top regional artists including Jack Semple, Mark DeJong, Dan Silljer, and is a current member of Jason Plumb and the Willing. Summer of 2009 sees Jeff launch his radio career as musical director and pianist for CBC Radio One.

Montreal based Donny Kennedy, composer, educator and saxophonist, leads his own ensemble and teaches at McGill University and St. George’s School. The Donny Kennedy Sextet recently released their debut CD, Horizons.

Guitarist Greg Duncan now lives in Boston, where he is an active performer on the East Coast music scene. Duncan has appeared at major venues and festivals with greats such as Roy Hargrove, Kenny Wheeler and Jimmy Heath, to name a few, and is a member of the Jason Palmer Quintet.

Bassist Graham Purse is a well-traveled musician, having seen more than 70 countries on his cruise ship work. Purse is currently studying law at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Toronto based drummer Jon McCaslin is currently teaching and pursuing his Doctorate in Jazz Studies at the University of Toronto. McCaslin’s long list of performance credits includes Canadian jazz greats Mike Rud, Pat La Barbera and Brad Turner, as well as ensemble work with the Altsys Jazz Orchestra, and the Regina Symphony Orchestra.
